Local in Las Vegas?

Strolling Of the Heifer's has released this year's list of the best states to eat locally.  The good news is, the lovely state of Nevada has jumped up a couple spots from last year! The bad news is,  we are forty ninth out of fifty one.
Being low is understandable because a lot of people are under the impression that food simply cannot grow here. It's hot as balls in the summer, and our soil is sandy AF.  It can be difficult for food to grow, but it is not impossible. I have grown chamomile flowers, celery, and lettuce. It's not necessarily a complete meal, but it's better than nothing.

Another reason it is difficult to eat local is southern Nevadans do not know where to get locally grown and manufactured food. It's simpler to go to Whole Foods or Smith's and pick up produce there. Our Farmer's Markets are improving, but with busy schedules, it may be tough to take time out on a Saturday when your free time is limited. Luckily, Vegas Organic Garden is growing and it will soon be easy to pick up produce all over the Vegas Valley. There is also a drop off program for people who are unable to pick up. It's like bringing the Farmer's Market to you. You can sign up here to enter to win a free basket of produce. It will also sign you up for our newsletter.

The best state to eat locally is Vermont. Vermont has a lot of farmer's markets, CSAs, and farm to school programs. I know that I am not the first person to admit that our state doesn't care about public schools. I believe that a lot of the problems our schools have could improve if money was allocated more responsibly. It is said that one in four students in Southern Nevada suffer from food insecurity. A farm to school program would be so helpful for those children. It would also help food secure children. Kids are more likely to eat vegetables if they help it grow.  Horticulture is a lost science and art that need to be revived in Southern Nevada. If the Bellagio can change their beautiful garden every few months, it shouldn't be difficult to teach kids how to have a garden.  Moapa High School does it beautifully.

There are many local places you can taker your family out to eat.  My favorites being LYFE Kitchen  in Henderson, Honey Salt in Summerlin, Sunrise Coffee near the airport and Black Cup Coffee Co. in Container Park. I feel that local restaurants should be considered over chains. When you buy locally, the money is going back into our economy, and that's always a good thing.
